Fibre optics with the FRITZ!Box

Internet at the speed of light

Fast, stable, and future-proof: Fibre optics use pulses of light to stably transmit data over kilometres without any loss of speed. Fibre optic networks are also immune to electrical and magnetic interference and offer symmetrical gigabit downstream and upstream speeds.

How fast is fibre optics?

The speeds that can be achieved with a fibre optics connection depend on the technology used by the fibre optic provider. In Germany, AON or GPON connections with speeds of up to 1 gigabit/s are offered, occasionally also XGS-PON connections with higher speeds. Due to the great potential for expansion of fibre optic networks, which theoretically also allow terabit speeds, much faster connections can be also expected in the future.

  • AON: 1 Gbit/s (downstream and upstream)
  • GPON: 2.5 Gbit/s (downstream) and 1.25 Gbit/s (upstream)
  • XGS-PON: 10 Gbit/s (downstream and upstream)

Your provider can tell you which fibre optic technology is used at your location. You can find detailed information on the various fibre optic technologies in our guide.

How do you set up the FRITZ!Box for use with a fibre optic connection?

There are two different options for using the FRITZ!Box on a fibre optic connection:

Connect the FRITZ!Box directly to the fibre optic connection

FRITZ!Box models with integrated fibre optic modems can be used directly on the fibre optic connection, saving space and power.

  • Connect the FRITZ!Box to the fibre optic socket and to the electrical socket. You can find step-by-step instructions for many fibre optic providers in our Router Freedom portal.

Connect the FRITZ!Box to a fibre optic modem (ONT)

If you cannot connect the FRITZ!Box directly, you can also use a network cable to connect FRITZ!Boxes to an existing fibre optic modem (ONT):

  • Connect the fibre optic modem to the fibre optic socket and connect the FRITZ!Box to the fibre optic modem. Then configure the FRITZ!Box for use on a fibre optic modem.

Which FRITZ!Box for which fibre optics connection?

FRITZ!Box models with integrated fibre optic modems can be used with all AON and GPON connections with speeds of up to 2.5 gigabit/s. A few fibre optic providers also offer FRITZ!Box models for XGS-PON connections with higher speeds.

FRITZ!Box models with WAN ports can be used with any fibre optic modem (ONT). Make sure that the FRITZ!Box's WAN port is at least as fast as your fibre optic connection. Otherwise, the speed of the internet connection will be limited by the speed of the WAN port.

Our model comparison helps you select the right FRITZ!Box.
