New features in detail
New prioritization feature automatically ensures the best possible connection when it matters most
The new FRITZ!OS introduces enhancements for even more stable and faster connections, which are particularly beneficial for real-time communication such as video conferences and gaming. They are automatically detected and prioritized. If such communication is currently in progress, the prioritization is displayed in the user interface of the respective network device. This information can also be viewed on the details page up to 24 hours later.
What's more, all prioritization settings are now also supported in the home network direction.
These enhancements for prioritization are currently available for a number of selected FRITZ!Box models and will be rolled out for additional devices in the coming weeks.
FRITZ!OS DNS filter blocks unwanted content
With FRITZ!OS 8.40 it is possible to block access from home network devices like smartphones or computers to certain internet addresses (known as ‘domains’). The FRITZ!Box supports common standards to read in and process lists of undesirable domain names. Users can also resort to publicly available DNS filter lists to filter out advertising, trackers and malware.
Blocking of this kind is configured via the fritz.box user interface under Home Network > Network > Network Settings > Change Advanced Network Settings > DNS Filter. Filter lists can be added and updated periodically or manually, which helps make the internet connection more secure. Additional information is presented in the Online Help on the relevant page (https://fritzhelp.avm.de/help/en/FRITZ-Box-7590-AX/avm/026p1/hilfe_netzwerk_dns_filterlisten). This filtering applies to all home network devices that adopt the IP settings from the FRITZ!Box. This is generally the case. Exceptions can be configured, if necessary.
Smart Check shows the current status of the FRITZ!Box in the MyFRITZ!App and outputs notifications and recommendations
With the new ‘Smart Check’ feature, the MyFRITZ!App now shows its users the current status of their FRITZ!Box directly on the start screen. In the categories FRITZ!OS, Smart Home, Telephony, USB, Home Network, Internet, Wi-Fi, LAN and Security, users receive helpful recommendations, notifications and warnings – always with concrete tips for fast implementation. This way users keep track of their home network and can ensure optimum performance and security with just a few steps (iOS: MyFRITZ!App 2.16.0, Android: MyFRITZ!App 2.29.0. or later).
